THE YEAR WITH THE BABYThe film opens as Agnes Ward (Eva Victor) welcomes her best friend Lydie (Naomi Ackie) to her home in New England after a long period away. The two spend the night hanging out together, along with Agnes’s cat Olga, and are briefly interrupted by the arrival of Agnes’s neighbor Gavin (Lucas Hedges), with whom she is implied to be hooking up. Lydie also announces to Agnes that she is pregnant via sperm donor. Agnes and Lydie visit their old college friends Logan (Jordan Mendoza), Devin (Cody Reiss), and Natasha (Kelly McCormack). The two friends consider Natasha to be unpleasant. Agnes talks about her job as a professor at the college that they all used to go to. Natasha makes condescending comments about Agnes getting the job, and Lydie defends her friend by hitting Natasha with another snippy comment. Later before bed, Agnes talks to Lydie’s stomach and makes jokes to the fetus about Agnes being its other parent. THE YEAR WITH THE BAD THINGThe film jumps to a while back when Agnes, Lydie, and their friends were students were in a grad program advising group, led by Professor Preston Decker (Louis Cancelmi). Speaking privately with Decker, Agnes talks to him about how much she likes his first novel. He responds by speaking highly of her thesis paper and gifts her a first edition of “To The Lighthouse”. Decker invites Agnes to his home, saying that his son is staying with his ex-wife. Some time passes, but Agnes leaves the house in a shell-shocked state, driving home quietly. When she gets home, she tells Lydie that she was sexually assaulted by Decker. Agnes takes a bath and recounts the experience to Lydie in graphic detail. Lydie takes Agnes to the doctor, where they argue with him over

his tone in asking Agnes about what happened with her. Later, Agnes speaks to the school’s disciplinary board, only to learn that Decker has transferred to a different school in New York. Since Agnes reported his assault of her after he left, they are unable to do anything about it. Agnes suffers from depression as a result of her trauma. While out for a walk, she finds a stray kitten and adopts her (Olga). She later talks to Lydie about how she’s considered burning down Decker’s office for catharsis, as she has gotten lighter fluid from Gavin (meeting him for the first time). Lydie offers to do it herself, but Agnes changes her mind. She also says she doesn’t want to press charges against Decker because he’s a co-parent. Lydie later leaves New England and starts a relationship with someone named Fran (E.R. Fightmaster). Agnes begins a sexual relationship with Gavin. THE YEAR WITH THE QUESTIONSSometime later, Agnes is on jury duty. She tells the judge that she feels she is impartial to be on the jury because of her assault. Furthermore, Agnes states that she did not want Decker to be in jail, because she feels that he would not learn or change as a result, as well as not wanting to ruin his kid’s life. Agnes is dismissed from the jury. THE YEAR WITH THE GOOD SANDWICHAgnes is seen working as a part-time professor, lecturing her class on “Lolita” and its themes. She is called to the office to find out that she has been recommended for a full-time teaching job. Agnes is later visited by Natasha, who backhandedly notes Agnes’s accomplishment in her new position. Natasha refers to her as Decker’s “chosen one” who got the position, admitting that she had sex with him when they were

students and she got nothing out of it. This comment causes Agnes to suffer a panic attack while driving home. She pulls over and is comforted by a sandwich shop owner named Pete (John Carroll Lynch), who gives her a sandwich and sits to have a chat with her about life. Agnes later goes to Gavin and invites him over for sex. After they hook up, Gavin joins Agnes for a bath. When he stands up to change positions, Agnes observes his penis and makes a funny comment about it. Gavin then sits behind Agnes and puts his arms around her. THE YEAR WITH THE BABYBack in the present time, Lydie has had her baby, Jane, and is married to Fran. They visit Agnes’s home and are planning a trip to check out the lighthouse. Fran feels that someone should be there and watch Jane, so Agnes chooses to stay behind while Lydie and Fran go visit the lighthouse. Agnes takes Jane with her and gives her a small speech about how she can go to her in the future whenever she has something she wants to say or if she has an issue. Agnes also says that she is sorry that Jane will grow up in a world where she will have bad experiences, but Agnes hopes that she doesn’t have to, expressing hope that the baby will be okay.
